There are hundreds of types of work you can do to keep yourself busy. If you have recently lost a job, you do not have to rely solely on the pittance that is the unemployment wage. If the endless job search process is leaving you unfulfilled and feeling useless, fear not. There are things that you can do day to day that can improve your mood, and maybe even turn into a new career.
Find Local Work
In most cities and towns, there are companies that take workers for a variety of jobs, and pay daily. Companies like Labor Ready for general day labor or CLP for more skilled workers will help get you off the couch and back into the workforce. I can pretty much guarantee that you will not be making what you were at your job, but it can kill the monotony and put some money in the wallet.
You can also do some odd jobs around the neighborhood, and get some side money in addition to the unemployment or your day labor wages. If you are uncomfortable going door to door in search of some odd jobs, you can create a website to advertise your availability or submit your information to yardworkerz.com and be matched with homeowners or small businesses in your area that could use your help.
If day labor is not your thing, try your hat at sales. Companies like Avon, Mary Kay and Amway Global present opportunities to kill boredom and make some money.
Freelancing
Maybe it is your thing, maybe not. If you can do it, why not try? Check out sites like allfreelance.com or getafreelancer.com to bid against others for freelance jobs. Some are simple writing or data entry jobs and some are for more skilled online workers, so if you are vying for one of these postings, make sure you are qualified. If you are incapable, you are wasting both your time and the time of the company/webmaster looking for help. If you are just looking to write and are not interested in technical work, try Ehow, a site that allows you to teach nearly anything and pays you based on the number of views the page receives. If it is general writing that you are looking to do, Associated Content allows you to write about anything in the world, and get paid based on traffic to your piece. You can also bid on specific jobs and get paid a pre-determined fee.
Temporary Work
If you head on over to your local temp agency, it may be crowded. Even if you are in a long line, there are still companies looking for temporary help (that may even become a permanent position). Manpower, the largest temp agency in the world is also one of the leading employers in the US. Other agencies like Office Team, Net Temps, and Coolworks can pair you with the ideal employer based on skills and talents.
If you are out of work and have a family at home to provide for, take what you can get. If it were my family, I would do anything to help put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads. If you feel as if you are “above” working certain places, you are in the wrong place. Get off your high horse and get back to work.
